Yayasan PETRONAS’ Uplifting Lives contribution spreads joy across the Nation this Deepavali

KUANTAN, 1 NOVEMBER 2023 — In the spirit of unity and giving back, Yayasan PETRONAS is delighted to announce its contribution of festive food to underprivileged communities across the country this Deepavali. The contribution serves as a testament to the foundation’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need during this auspicious festival. The distribution of festive essential food items and festive food hampers begin on the 25th October in 11 states throughout Malaysia, with the support of dedicated volunteers and the Welfare Department. This year, the foundation has begun distributing essential food items and festive treats to underserved communities in various regions across Malaysia. The contribution is expected to reach 1600 families during the festive season. For the Deepavali season, items that are distributed include basmati rice, curry and kesari powder, and murukku hampers. Speaking about the contribution, Shariah Nelly Francis, CEO of Yayasan PETRONAS, shared, “Deepavali is a time when friends and families come together to celebrate, pray and hope for a healthy and better future.” “At Yayasan PETRONAS, we are committed to contribute towards ensuring that no one is left behind. Nevertheless, we are excited to be able to bring smiles to the communities by providing them with the gift of food and festivity,” she said. In conjunction with major celebrations in Malaysia, Yayasan PETRONAS contributes food items to underserved communities every year. The Uplifting Lives programme is part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ community well-being and development focus area. Program Duta Guru 2023 National Symposium — Building Future Proof STEM Problem Solvers

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 OCTOBER 2023 – Yayasan PETRONAS in collaboration with Teach For Malaysia (TFM), through its Program Duta Guru (PDG) initiative, organised its largest PDG National Symposium to date, in a bid to bridge the gap between real world solutions and tackling Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related problems in the classrooms. The two-day conference—themed of Building Future-Proof Problem Solvers: Exploring the Intersection between Integrated STEM and a Sustainable Future–gathered over 900 attendees including key stakeholders, policymakers, educational subject experts, teachers and students from around the nation. Held for the third consecutive year, the conference featured two keynote sessions, panel discussions and exhibition by teachers, NGOs and the private sector, provided attendees the opportunity to gather, connect and share knowledge and best practices in education. Dr. Ahmad Rafee Che Kassim, Deputy Director-General of Education, Policy and Curriculum Sector officiated PDG National Symposium 2023 and shared his optimism in the progress and development of the teacher training programme.  “I am glad to see that we have begun to reap the fruits of labor from PDG. This is made possible by the collective effort between Yayasan PETRONAS and the Ministry of Education. This year, we recorded and exceeded the STEM enrolment rate of 45% among students nationwide. We are in the right direction, and, with consistent effort, we can go further.” The Symposium also saw its first Student Roundtable Discussion on the topic of Empowering Future Innovators: Fostering a Culture of Problem-solving and Critical Thinking in STEM Classrooms where students shared how they applied higher order thinking skills in studies and STEM projects. Shariah Nelly Francis, CEO of Yayasan PETRONAS in her welcoming remarks said: “PDG is very much aligned with the 12th Malaysia Plan in ensuring equal access to quality education, regardless of location and background. We are also heartened by the Government’s initiatives as outlined in the recent Budget 2024 to further advance the nation’s STEM enrolment. This demonstrates the commitment of the country in cultivating the students’ interest in STEM in producing a highly skilled workforce that can propel Malaysia’s economic progress.” The National Symposium concluded with a Duta Guru recognition, where 243 teachers from Cohort three of PDG received the Duta Guru award. The award also marked the start of their journey as a catalyst for STEM education in their respective schools and districts after completing the 2-year training session. Yayasan PETRONAS Brings Coding and Creativity to Secondary School Students

KOTA KINABALU, 25 August 2023 – Seven groups comprising 60 secondary school students from SMK St. Peter Telipok and SMK Perempuan Likas hovered at the backstage on the morning of 4th August 2023, awaiting to be called to present and share their interventions to a panel of judges. They were part of the Powering Knowledge – Yayasan PETRONAS Coding4All (YPC4All) programme, which encourages students to use creativity, science, and technology to solve specific problems. The solutions presented ranged from motion detection sensors to help farmers prevent cattle theft, to a nifty smart window that opens and closes automatically, using an application that syncs with local weather forecasts. In pitching these solutions to the judging panel, they applied the 4Cs – critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity– skills that are essential for students to thrive and succeed in the future. “I have learnt so much from the programme. Aside form learning to code, it has helped me to better understand the importance of group work and communication in our project,” said Mohammad Aman Shah, 14, a participant who was part of the smart window application team from SMK St. Peter Telipok. The programme was organised by Yayasan PETRONAS in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia through its Bahagian Pengurusan Sekolah Harian, and Petrosains as the implementation partner. Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan PETRONAS, Shariah Nelly Francis, said, “Students were exposed to the introduction of technology that is part of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) as an initial preparation for them to understand and cultivate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as career opportunities in this field are growing rapidly.” The programme stared in July 2022 until August 2023, involving 35 trainers and a target of 210 Form One students from seven schools namely SMK Impian Emas, Johor; SMK Bandar Uda Utama, Johor; SMK Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat, Johor; SM St. Peter Telipok, Sabah; SMK Perempuan Likas, Sabah; SMK Bandar Samariang Sarawak; and SMK Pending, Sarawak. The finale event served as a platform for participants to practice the 4Cs learned from the programme and showcase the results. Yayasan PETRONAS Uplifts Over 115,000 Lives in 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Aug 2023 – Yayasan PETRONAS, the social impact arm of PETRONAS, today released its annual report for 2022, highlighting the foundation’s impact in uplifting over 115,000 lives across its three focus areas of Education, Community Wellbeing and Development, and Environment. Carrying the theme “Empowering Change in Communities”, the Yayasan PETRONAS annual report encapsulates the foundation’s belief in empowering individuals and communities, to collectively drive transformative change for a sustainable future.  “Through our three core social impact pillars, we continued to unlock the potential of individuals, foster inclusive and resilient communities as well as preserve our environment. We remain deeply committed to creating impactful value for all, working towards ‘Empowering Change in Communities’ for the betterment of society,” Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Shariah Nelly Francis said. Yayasan PETRONAS had launched the Bridging the Online Learning Divide (BOLD) Programme that enriched existing remedial programmes in schools nationwide, to address learning loss among high-needs students from school closures during the pandemic. Through BOLD, the foundation assisted 2,000 students in primary schools across six states in the country with 1,600 volunteer tutors recruited and trained to deliver one-to-one remediation remotely, using a Literacy Toolkit by MYReaders.  During the year, the Foundation’s flagship teacher training programme Program Duta Guru also saw 253 teachers completing the two-year training programme and taking on roles as Duta Guru to advocate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in their respective schools, as part of a bid to increase national STEM enrolment.  As part of an effort to build thriving communities, Yayasan PETRONAS’ Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR) participants achieved livelihood breakthroughs through upskilling programmes with its strategic partners, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) and East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).  Another programme under the Foundation’s Community Well-being and Development pillar, the Sentuhan Kasih initiative, uplifted lives through Sentuhan Kasih Festive, Homes and Disaster Relief programmes. A total of RM3.37 million were channelled, in-kind contributions, aiding over 60,000 beneficiaries collectively in 2022. Yayasan PETRONAS upheld its Environmental pillar’s approach of ecosystem restoration by supporting conservation efforts under the PETRONAS Walk4Trees Challenge. A total of 61,584 trees were planted across 11 states since the project began in September 2020, surpassing its initial target of 50,000 trees.  The programme also enriched the communities in the vicinity by creating awareness on nature conservation and upskilling them by providing the opportunity in setting up nurseries allowing them to earn additional income.
