Program Duta Guru Teachers, Students engage in STEM Learning with F1 Champion Lewis Hamilton

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 October 2022 – Yayasan PETRONAS through its signature education programme, Program Duta Guru (PDG) recently collaborated with Petrosains to host a special sharing session here, with seven-time world champion Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. 10 PDG teachers and 40 lower-secondary school students were selected to join the ‘Ready, Set, Accelerate! STEM winning formula with Lewis Hamilton’ session at KL Convention Centre. They participated in the Elasticity, Potential, and Kinetics (ELPOKI) Car Project Workshop which culminated at the end of the session in the ELPOKI Car Heat Race.  ELPOKI comprises three main science concepts involved in building an ELPOKI Car model. During the workshop, the teachers engaged in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) lesson that focused on designing a mechanical car for the ELPOKI Car project. They then used the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to structure and communicate their project development as they facilitated the students’ reflection on adapting the activity for classroom learning in a later session.  Dalila Yahya, a teacher from Cheras Secondary School said, “It was good to see the students learning from each other. Their communications skills or ‘soft skills’ are important to convey ideas well. We would also like to thank Yayasan PETRONAS for providing enough equipment for the students to ‘explore’ in building the models. They managed to complete two ELPOKI Car models utilising the equipment given”. Student Nur Eldina Zainuddin from Vivekananda Secondary School said, “My favourite session today was when we got to build the ELPOKI Car together with our teams. This competition taught us that there must be teamwork in every task we do to succeed.” The students also had the opportunity to interact with Hamilton during a question and answer (Q&A) session with the British racing driver, where he pointed out the important role that educators play. He said, “It is a difficult job being a teacher, they have such an incredible power in influencing youth. For me, having good role models is important to encourage everyone that there are no limits to what you can be.” Hamilton was in Kuala Lumpur for the renewal of the PETRONAS and Mercedes AMG Title and Technical Partnership from the 2026 season onwards. Launched in 2019, PDG is Yayasan PETRONAS’ flagship education programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, that aims to improve and solidify the capability of local public-school teachers to promote students’ interest and competency in STEM subjects and enhance their higher order thinking skills. The programme is in line with Yayasan PETRONAS’ goal of contributing towards 60:40 National STEM enrolment. Issued by:Yayasan PETRONAS

Yayasan PETRONAS’ MEKAR Programme Provides Water Supply to Five Villages in Sabah

PITAS, 14 September 2022 – Some 200 families in five villages here are now benefitting from clean and regular water supply following the installation of water supply systems under Yayasan PETRONAS’ Program Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR), which aims to improve the well-being of the B40 communities. The villages are Kampung Boribi Kanibongan, Kampung Gunsali, Kampung Mapad Kanibongan, Kampung Ranggal, and Kampung Mangkapon Darat which are about four hours’ drive from Sabah’s capital city Kota Kinabalu. “We hope that the local communities will be able to enjoy a consistent supply of clean water that is now available to them, especially during dry season,” Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis said. With the support of PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan, the project involved the Pitas District Office, Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK), village heads and contractors from the beneficiary villages, as well as KLCC Projeks Sdn Bhd as the technical advisor, and Tonibung as the implementation partner. The project, implemented over a period of 18 months, involved the provision of a clean water supply system that is easy to access, simple to operate, and safer than, for instance, trekking uneven terrain to a water source such as the river. “We hope that the villagers will work together to maintain this system so that it can remain functional in the long term,” Shariah Nelly said. The supply of water utilises a gravity-fed system as well as solar-powered water pumps, and also comprise water catchments, pipes, pump houses, water filters, main storage tanks, and collection points. To signify the completion of this project, a handover ceremony was recently held at Kampung Mangkapon Darat officiated by State Minister of Rural Development Datuk Jahid Jahim. Also present were Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis, PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Project Delivery & Technology Bacho Pilong, Head of PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab, and Tumpulan Tompung, representing the Mangkapon Darat JPKK. Joining them were Director of State Economic Planning Unit Jasmine Teo, who is the Co-chair of the Sub-Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility, one of the six sub-committees under the Sabah-PETRONAS Joint Coordination Committee, and Chief Conservator of Forests Datuk Frederick Kugan, a member of the sub-committee. The ceremony also included a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activity, in which students from the villages, led by four Program Duta Guru (PDG) teachers, learnt to assemble mini race cars using simple materials such as balloons, water bottles, and bottle caps. Thereafter, the students took their cars to a competition, to showcase and cultivate interest in STEM. MEKAR is part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ community well-being and development focus area. Meanwhile, PDG is Yayasan PETRONAS’ signature programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, through Pusat STEM Negara, under its education focus area. PDG aims to upskill 4,500 teachers nationwide in higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) to serve as role models in the delivery of STEM subjects to students. Both programmes are in line with the PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Issued by:Yayasan PETRONAS

Yayasan PETRONAS Celebrates Milestone of Planting 57,545 Trees across Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 August 2022 – Yayasan PETRONAS celebrated its milestone of planting  57,545 trees at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve in Selangor recently, to recognize the achievement  by PETRONAS employees surpassing the targeted 20 billion steps for the Walk4Trees Challenge.   Yayasan PETRONAS took up PETRONAS’ pledge to plant one tree for every million steps by  initiating a nationwide tree-planting project earlier in September 2020, in support of the  ‘Walk4Trees’ walking challenge.   Over 23,400 PETRONAS employees participated in the challenge and achieved a collective total  of 24.02 billion steps, exceeding the initial target set in June 2021 and contributing an additional  4,020 trees on top of the 20,000 trees pledged earlier.  Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Shariah Nelly Francis said, “The Walk4Trees  initiative is one way we step in to create sustainable impact for the environment. The remarkable  collective achievement by PETRONAS staff drives us to also go beyond the initial target by  planting 57,545 trees, honoring our commitment to environmental conservation.”   Close to 150 volunteers comprising PETRONAS staff along with the local community and state  forestry department planted 300 trees at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve during the tree planting  event.  PETRONAS Head of Occupational Health, Group Health, Safety and Environment (HSE),  Norsayani M. Yaakob said, “The Walk4Trees challenge is our way of contributing to the  environment, while focusing on the health of our workforce by promoting physical activities  leveraging on a virtual digital application. It’s a great achievement for all of us because we get to  do our part for Mother Earth.” The trees were planted at 14 planting sites across 11 states in the country over the course of two  years. To date, a total of 8,300 trees consisting of 8,250 Tenggek Burung and 50 Pulai trees have  been planted at the Raja Muda Forest Reserve. The carbon sequestration from planting 57,545 trees, together with measures to improve water  management and fire prevention is estimated to reduce the greenhouse emissions by more than  200 tonnes of carbon dioxide during the project period.  The tree-planting project also involved the appointed implementation partner, Global Environment  Centre (GEC) together with 21 community groups living near the project sites in which 254  community members have been involved in the establishment or enhancement of the tree  nurseries and planting, monitoring and maintenance of the trees.  “It is important for us to give back and do good for the people of the nearby communities, hence  the involvement of the surrounding communities makes it extra meaningful,” added Shariah.  GEC Director, Faizal Parish said, “The rehabilitation of the forest at the 14 targeted locations  under the Yayasan PETRONAS Tree Planting Programme has benefited the local communities  who have helped replant them. They have benefited directly through the income generated from  tree nurseries, planting and maintenance. In addition, the communities have benefited indirectly  through forest protection and enhanced ecological services such as water supply, fish habitat and  erosion control. I am confident that this tree planting project holds long-term benefits.”  The benefits of the project also support the “Program Penghijauan Malaysia” through the  “Kempen Penanaman 100 juta pokok”.  Selangor Forestry Department Director, Ahmad Fadzil said, “The Selangor State Forestry  Department is always committed towards forest conservation and rehabilitation efforts that  emphasise greatly on ecological and environmental aspects. It is to ensure the long-term  sustainability of forests’ services and produce in Selangor. We applaud Yayasan PETRONAS  and GEC for choosing Raja Musa Forest Reserve as one of the planting sites under the Tree  Planting Programme in support of Walk4Trees challenge. Hopefully, other stakeholders will  emulate such efforts.” Within its environment focus area Sentuhan Alam, Yayasan PETRONAS aims to improve the  environment through biodiversity, conservation and carbon-neutral programmes towards  enriching lives for a sustainable future. Addressing learning loss among high-need children KUALA LUMPUR, 29 April 2022 – Yayasan PETRONAS has introduced a new programme under its education focus area to improve literacy skills among underprivileged students  nationwide.   The initiative, named the Sentuhan Ilmu Bridging the Online Learning Divide (BOLD) Programme,  is a comprehensive intervention programme to address learning loss among high-need students.  The programme will provide Internet-enabled tablets, digital modules, and immediate learning  support through volunteer tutors to 2,000 high-need children from B40 communities.  The tablets will enable the students ranging from ages seven to nine, to participate in learning,  peer engagement and address learning losses due to school closures brought upon by the  COVID-19 pandemic.   Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Shariah Nelly Francis said, “The eradication of  poverty begins with education, while the very basis of education is literacy — the ability to read. The pandemic has made it even more difficult for underprivileged children to learn and this could  mean missing out on reading their first book in class, with proper guidance in a structured manner.  “Early literacy abilities are critical for school readiness and achieving long-term school success.  The BOLD Programme is one of the ways that we can contribute to empower a child with the gift  of literacy.”   A total of 1,600 volunteer tutors comprising PETRONAS staff and members of the public have  been trained to deliver one-to-one remediation remotely via the WhatsApp app, using the  MYReaders Literacy Toolkit that contains practical tools to provide effective literacy intervention.  MYReaders is the implementation partner for Yayasan PETRONAS’ BOLD Programme.
