KLUANG, 2 December 2021 – Yayasan PETRONAS, has reached out to brighten the lives of the Kampung Orang Asli Berasau community by providing solar-powered electricity to the village. A total of 11 houses, two cultural houses, and a community hall have been installed with solar power systems under the Sentuhan Harapan MEKAR Johor@Kluang programme. This programme is organised in collaboration with Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) Johor, Kampung Orang Asli Berasau and Yayasan Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). The aim is to enhance the livelihood and economic growth of the underprivileged communities through the provision of solar-powered electricity that promotes the sustainability essence in support of PETRONAS Sustainability agenda. Sentuhan Harapan MEKAR Johor@Kluang, under the flagship Program Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR), also supports Yayasan PETRONAS’ objective in promoting community well-being and development through long term sustainable advancements in the areas of socio-economic developments, healthcare, safety and living environments.  Located 50km from Kluang town, Kampung Orang Asli Berasau is the only settlement in Johor without access to the national grid. In the last 20 years, the community has been living in the dark, relying solely on diesel generators they shared amongst themselves for its 2-hour supply of electricity every day.Under this solar initiative, each house now receives a basic electricity supply with batteries that can last up to three days during the rainy season, LED lamps, fans, and several USB ports for phone charging. With solar-powered electricity, each household is able to save an estimated RM450 a month, reducing the financial burden the community has faced for many years. In addition, one of the Rumah Adat has been provided with a freezer (a common freezer for all) equipped with an additional solar panel to ensure that it remains functional for the community. With this initiative, it benefits 70 villagers from 17 families aged four to 70 years old. As part of this programme, the community was taught and trained to perform basic maintenance on the solar panels to ensure their efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, the solar power systems were inspected and verified by technical experts for safety. Sari Achu, Tok Batin, Kampung Orang Asli Berasau shared his joy of having solar-powered electricity with YB Tuan Vidyananthan a/l Ramanadhan, Johor Health and Environment Committee Chairman, during the launch of the Sentuhan Harapan MEKAR Johor@Kluang solar initiative in Kampung Berasau, together with Shariah Nelly Francis, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan PETRONAS, and Sazli Zakaria, Head of PETRONAS Southern. “We appreciate the collaboration of all parties involved. It is heartening to see the advancement and amenities that we are able to provide with this programme. Yayasan PETRONAS provides 12,000 Students with Devices and Internet Access to Enable Online Learning

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 June 2021 – Yayasan PETRONAS is distributing devices with data connectivity to 12,000 students nationwide which will enable them to have better access to online learning as the education landscape in Malaysia shifts to one of hybrid teaching and learning. The RM30 million worth of digital devices are being supplied to 81 schools in 69 districts, from 17 May until mid-June as part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ commitment to CERDIK, an initiative by Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) to provide digital access to students from underprivileged families.   Working in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ministry of Finance (MoF), and Yayasan Hasanah (the Secretariat), as well as other GLC and GLIC partners, Yayasan PETRONAS prioritised schools with a majority of students from B40 households.  The devices provided through CERDIK are designed to support the students’ learning requirements for three academic years, and are fitted with data services, maintenance, warranty and technical support.  “Through CERDIK, we want to provide equitable access to quality education for students as it is the first step to close the digital gap towards enriching their educational experiences and lives,” said Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis.  “With these devices and Internet service, we hope more students – especially those from underprivileged and rural communities – can better participate in online lessons.”  According to a survey of 900,000 students conducted by MoE last year, 37 per cent indicated that they did not have appropriate devices at home to participate in online lessons last year.  “During these difficult times, we must help ensure that no one gets left behind in the pursuit of education,” Nelly added, recognising that many families are facing financial pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. “We thank Yayasan PETRONAS for their support to CERDIK, one of the most comprehensive pilot initiatives on digital learning in public schools nationwide. Despite logistics issues due to the movement restrictions around the world, we are still on track to deliver the devices based on the stipulated timelines,” said Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah. The contribution to CERDIK complements Yayasan PETRONAS’ various education outreach initiatives benefitting students and teachers. These include the recent Back To School programme in March 2021, where school supplies and personal hygiene kits were distributed to 21,000 students from underprivileged families nationwide.  The foundation also rolled out its signature Program Duta Guru, a collaboration between Yayasan PETRONAS and MoE. Earlier this year, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics teachers were provided with online teaching kits and guidance in delivering lessons for improved learning outcomes. ABOUT CERDIK CERDIK is a GLC-driven CSR pilot initiative announced in the Budget 2021 to provide digital access to education via accessibility of devices and data connectivity. In partnership with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the initiative is fully funded by Government Linked Companies (GLCs), Government Linked Investment Companies (GLICs), and the private sector and it seeks to enable continuous learning in the new norm and provide education access to the most marginalised school children. Yayasan PETRONAS Equips 136 Stem Teachers for Hybrid Teaching

Kuala Lumpur, 7 April 2021 –  Yayasan PETRONAS, through its Program Duta Guru (PDG) initiative, has successfully equipped  its first cohort of 136 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers for hybrid teaching via classroom and virtual modes across 113 school districts in Malaysia. Over the past months, each teacher received an online teaching kit which includes a mini green screen kit, a pedagogical book Pembelajaran Abad-21 and school stationery to help make online lessons effective, fun and interactive. They also received guidance on how to innovate and apply these items to create more engaging virtual lessons for their students. With public secondary schools reopening this week, over 180,000 school teachers are expected to transition back to regular teaching duties in Malaysia. Despite this, teachers would still need to continue with the online delivery of lessons as and when needed. “Our teachers are critical to the nation’s progress – they play such a huge role in the success of our students. Together with our partners, we are supporting the teachers’ professional development so they may better help students navigate the new normal and enhance their Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through the STEM subjects,” said Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis.  Initiated in 2019, PDG is a collaboration between Yayasan PETRONAS and the Ministry of Education’s Pusat STEM Negara, with Teach For Malaysia as the implementation partner. It aims to strengthen the teachers’ capability and continuously improve their teaching quality through training and coaching, curated content and by providing infrastructure. PDG was rolled out through a series of three virtual sessions last year, where teachers gained insights from successful innovators in STEM education, discussed trends and challenges in the field – including how to effectively manage online classrooms and improve student learning outcomes. Chief Executive Officer of Teach For Malaysia, Chan Soon Seng said, “Along with the rest of the world, the future of educators is one fused with technology. Teachers will need to become savvy users of digital tools, as well as creators of online content and knowledge. They need to help their students foster these skills for the future workforce as well.” Since the delivery of the online teaching kits in December, many teachers have taken the opportunity to prepare ahead for their lessons this year. “This programme is very beneficial to me. It has impacted how I apply integrated STEM teaching into delivering online lessons. It also helped in boosting my confidence to be a STEM leader in school,” said Zulfadzli Mahamad @ Muhamad, a teacher from SMK Trusan, Sarawak who is part of PDG’s Cohort 1. Another PDG inductee from Labuan, Angela Joseph went a step further to collaborate with Yayasan PETRONAS in creating videos on the practice of good personal hygiene for primary school students. The collaboration was part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ Back To School programme, where 21,000 underprivileged primary school students received school supplies and personal hygiene kits.  “PDG taught me how to engage with students virtually and share these key takeaways with our teacher community groups. Through the collaboration with Yayasan PETRONAS, I am glad that students nationwide can also benefit from science to help them remember to follow the SOPs and stay safe,” said Angela.  Senior Principal Assistant Director of the National STEM Centre, Dr. Ihsan Ismail said, “With STEM teachers so consequential to the future of our students, we must address their needs as they face new challenges in their work. We hope to see more organisations stepping forward to collaborate with us in improving the quality of teaching in Malaysia.”  By 2030, PDG aims to have empowered 4,500 teachers to be highly capable STEM educators serving as role models in enhancing students’ interest and competency in STEM education and higher order thinking skills. Each teacher cohort will undergo a two-year training comprising workshops, online training, industry visits, and participate in projects that address issues hindering the progress of STEM in their student communities. PDG’s Cohort 2 is set to be inducted through a virtual session this month.  Issued by:Yayasan PETRONAS

We hope our contribution would help ease their situation as they continue to rebuild their lives.” Since last week, PETRONAS has distributed learning aids, including chairs, desks, racks and whiteboards to Tabika Kemas Kampung Teladas, Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Raja and Taska Kemas Kampung Shukur in Terengganu. Household items such as gas cookers, rice cookers, rice, cooking oil, amongst others, will be delivered to four villages in Pahang and two villages in Terengganu in the first week of April.  Floods in the East Coast earlier this year forced more than 10,000 people and over 23,000 people to be evacuated to relief centres in Terengganu and Pahang respectively. Amongst those worst hit were residents of Kemaman and Dungun, as well as Paya Bungor, Kuantan.  Head of PETRONAS East Coast Che Ahmad Tarmizi Abdul Rahman added: “We have been working closely with local community heads to assist the affected families and identify the communal facilities that require restoration and refurbishment. Annual Back to School programme goes beyond basics KUALA LUMPUR, 8 March 2021 – Yayasan PETRONAS will be providing 21,000 primary school  students from low-income households with personal hygiene kits and school supplies in  preparation for the 2021 academic year through its Back to School 2021 (BTS 2021) Programme.  The personal hygiene kits and school supplies are being distributed to schools across Johor,  Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Perlis,  Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Terengganu, from 8 to 24 March 2021.  Through the programme, a total of 21,000 students will each receive two 3-layer reusable face  masks, a small towel, a box of paper soap, a school bag, a tumbler, a student activity notebook,  a pencil case and stationery items, as well as two sets of school uniforms and a pair of socks and  shoes. The student activity notebook includes several simple science experiments on personal  hygiene, health infographics and stickers, designed to spark interest amongst the students and  help them understand science and its application in real life.  In addition to helping students resume school with ease, Yayasan PETRONAS, in collaboration  with the Ministry of Education, is also providing teachers at beneficiary schools with lesson plans  to cultivate an interest in the science of personal hygiene amongst primary students this year.   Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis said: “Our aim for Back To  School has been consistent since PETRONAS started with the programme 18 years ago. We  want to reduce one of the barriers that families from low-income households often experience,  which is the cost of school supplies, a factor linked to dropout rates. However, we are taking  additional steps this year by providing personal hygiene kits so that students can stay safe and  acclimatise to the ‘new normal’ as they resume school. “In addition to that, we also want to ensure we imbue two important factors – the pivotal role of  Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in preparing our children  for the future, and the enduring role teachers play in inspiring their students. This is why we are  going beyond the basics this year,” Nelly added.  Labuan-based teacher Angela Joseph, who designed the science lesson plans for this said: “I’m  so glad that Yayasan PETRONAS gave me this opportunity to share information on the science  behind COVID-19 in a fun way with underprivileged students who otherwise may not have access  to information.” Angela, who is part of the first cohort of teachers in Yayasan PETRONAS’  Program Duta Guru, also prepared supplementary lesson plans and provided instruction sheets  for teachers to record and share them online.  Yayasan PETRONAS also released a three-episode video on the science of personal hygiene  featuring “STEM Man”. It reminds parents, children and their community of the importance and  responsibility of practising safe habits so that schools will not be affected by an outbreak. The  videos are available on Yayasan PETRONAS’ online and social media channels.  BTS 2021 will run until the end of the month nationwide with the support of PETRONAS staff who also took time to post notes of encouragement to students to motivate them in their studies via  Yayasan PETRONAS’ social media channels.  The Back to School programme is part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ education focus area. Yayasan PETRONAS Commits to Planting 50,000 Trees by 2021

Global Environment Centre (GEC) as implementation partner to assist in upskilling communities KUALA LUMPUR, 19 February 2021 – Yayasan PETRONAS announced today its commitment to plant 50,000 trees as part of its environmental conservation Sentuhan Alam initiative. The project, which involves planting trees and enhancing the management of the trees in 14 sites across 11 states in Malaysia, is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by more than 200 tonnes.  Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis said: “Yayasan PETRONAS has a long legacy of safeguarding the environment. We aim to better the environment through biodiversity conservation and carbon-neutral programmes, such as rainforest conservation in Imbak Canyon, Sabah; marine biodiversity restoration in the Biodiversity, Environment & Conservation (BEACON) project in Sarawak; mangrove rehabilitation and the establishment of the EcoCare Centre in Kerteh, Terengganu. “We are also working with the Ecosystem Conservation and Tourism programme of the Setiu Wetlands State Park, Terengganu, to upgrade their facilities and drive programmes to eradicate poverty amongst the local communities that live off the biodiversity of the surrounding areas. These efforts began at our areas of operations and are scaled out nationwide, complementing our larger goals for greater environmental sustainability,” she added.  Yayasan PETRONAS’ appointed implementation partner Global Environment Centre (GEC) will be managing the programme for three years until August 2023. GEC’s duties include identifying and managing the setup of suitable planting grounds, selecting suitable plant species, facilitating community nurseries, site preparation, monitoring and ensuring the sustainable growth of the trees planted. The majority of sites consists of mangroves and peatland forests, with suitable tree species for mangroves sites such as the Rhizophora Mucronata (Bakau Kurap), Rhizophora Apiculata (Bakau Minyak), Bruguiera spp. and more, while the peatland sites will feature species that include the Melicope Lunu-ankenda (Tenggek Burung), Macaranga Pruinosa (Mahang) and Alstonia spp.  Nelly added: “The planting sites and tree species have been carefully identified to ensure it is ecologically viable and sustainable. Our aim is to guarantee at least 70 per cent survival rate for our trees and an improvement in the livelihoods of local forest-reliant communities.” Improving the livelihood of communities  Yayasan PETRONAS, through GEC, will be engaging communities in the nearby areas where the tree saplings will be planted, to either start up or expand their nurseries. They will be trained on how to care for and effectively monitor and manage the growth of these trees over a period of three years.  Director of GEC, Faizal Parish said: “In addition to establishing the forest tree nurseries, we will offer community groups extensive training in the proper collection and handling of seeds and wildlings, the preparation and maintenance of the planting sites and more. Through the empowerment and skills transfer, we want to enable them to attain a more sustainable livelihood by generating income from forest management and protection to support their daily lives and those of their family.”   Apart from a source of sustainable livelihood, the community is also expected to benefit in other ways from the rehabilitation of forests. This includes enhanced protection from coastal erosion and increases in fisheries for mangrove projects. For peatland forest projects, surrounding communities will benefit from a reduction in peatland fires and haze, as well as enhanced protection of peatland water sources and non-timber forest products. The rehabilitation efforts in lowland forest sites will offer its surrounding communities new opportunities in recreation and ecotourism, as well as protect their water sources.  “Tree planting and forest protection are among the best climate change solutions. Beyond being a great place to store carbon, forests will also help us better adapt to the consequences of the climate crisis – by protecting coastal areas from erosion, reducing the risk of flooding and providing a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and other plant species,” added Faizal.  PETRONAS Employees Step In Through Walk4Trees Yayasan PETRONAS’ initiative folds in a commitment made by PETRONAS and its employees in 2019 through a walking challenge called ‘Walk4Trees’. Through this programme, PETRONAS pledges to plant one tree for every million steps completed by its employees, contributing 20,000 out of the 50,000 trees commitment. “With 20 billion steps, employees are therefore contributing 20,000 trees out of the total that is being planted through this initiative,” said Nelly. The collective step count currently stands at 12.4 billion, or equivalent to 12,400 trees – and PETRONAS employees are confident that they will achieve its target by June 2021. Besides contributing their steps towards the programme, PETRONAS employees will also have an opportunity to volunteer in the tree planting programmes. The programme reflects PETRONAS’ commitment to contribute to the society and environment, aligned with the organisation’s Sustainability Agenda on safeguarding the environment.  In addition to conserving the environment, this project also gives PETRONAS employees a meaningful platform to positively impact their health, improve the climate and deliver positive outcomes for communities in need. In the spirit of inclusivity, the Challenge is also extended to the public, offering them an opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation for a sustainable future. Members of the public may register for the Challenge and record their steps via the BookDoc application, available on the App Store and Play Store. Within its environment focus area, Sentuhan Alam, Yayasan PETRONAS aims to improve the environment through biodiversity, conservation and carbon-neutral programmes towards enriching lives for a sustainable future.
