FOR PEOPLE, FOR PLANET

STUDENTS EMBRACE STEM TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE Yayasan PETRONAS’ CEO, Lita Osman, shares her thoughts on how the issue of climate change presents an opportunity for youths to seed solutions which can help us all flourish. In late 2018, as thousands of primary school students were preparing for the 2019 school year, the Malaysian government explored the feasibility of a Climate Change Act.  The two occurrences may seem disconnected, but by the time the Act gets tabled and enacted in the coming years, any of the students could make the next big breakthrough in mitigating climate change.  Studies already indicate that surface temperature, sea level and extreme weather events in Malaysia are trending upwards.  Global warming and weather changes have caused droughts leading to water shortages, forest fires and floods that cause death and affected the livelihoods of hundreds of communities each year, especially in the East Coast.  Thankfully, Malaysian students, when called on to innovate to help mitigate the effects of climate change, have been exploring a number of interesting approaches.  Sludge, Trash, Exhaust and Muck: STEM? The recent All About Youth (AAY) 2019, competition provided a platform for 1,000 secondary school students nationwide to put on their thinking caps to find solutions to protect the planet, and better the future for their communities.   The solutions offered by the youngsters, from air pollution detecting drones, forest fire warning systems to beeping bins capable of differentiating waste types,  were quite exciting. Other solutions offered by them include repurposing waste, biodegradable plastic compounds, solar-powered traffic lights system, carbon dioxide converters and a range of filters, detectors, sensors and automated systems which harness energy from natural sources. All the solutions centred on one ultimate aim,  to create a flourishing future by reducing carbon emissions.  As the climate change indicators for Malaysia point upwards, its citizens continue to grapple with the negative effect of rapid urbanisation, waste from neighbouring countries and a growing population – adding more sludge, trash, exhaust and muck to deal with alongside the development and economic growth. The Need For More Malaysian Whizz Kids! The current generation is obviously more conscious about how their actions may impact the planet, but the question is are we doing enough – to fix the effects of climate change, and mitigate its consequences?  Tackling the issue of climate change will require more thinkers, investigators and stronger public-private partnerships that drive towards reducing the country’s carbon intensity through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  As we advance to a developed country status, Malaysia will need more students pursuing STEM. If the intensity and results from AAY2019 are anything to go by, I believe there is a ray of hope as more ‘planet-savers’ and ‘nature inspectors’ come to the fore. We look forward to the day when Malaysian youths will helm discoveries in nanoscience and nanotechnology which increase the efficiency of solar cells, an important fossil fuel alternative or discover effective solutions to improve air pollution and acid levels in the oceans.  Issues = Opportunity For Impact Youths today will face the more severe impact of climate change and yet, also stand to benefit from the technology revolution and new jobs as a result of the challenges posed by climate change.  They need to be involved in exploring the impact and importance of protecting the environment, to commit and take action, connect with others who are taking action as well as explore new opportunities.  Students participating in AAY have shown how the next generation can lead in tackling climate action locally, nationally and even globally, as we shape a more sustainable future. Green is, after all, the new gold.

Yayasan PETRONAS reaffirms commitment to Cancer Research Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 September 2019 – Yayasan PETRONAS, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of PETRONAS, has pledged RM8 million to Cancer Research Malaysia (CRM) to support cutting-edge research in hereditary cancers among Asians. The funding will also enable CRM to expand its ground-breaking research and position Malaysia as a cancer research hub for Asia.  Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer Lita Osman said at a cheque presentation ceremony here today, that eventhough Asians make up for more than 50 per cent of the world’s population, Asians make up less than 10 per cent of cancer studies worldwide.  “The work CRM is spearheading requires more investigation as it will significantly improve patients’ survival chances and treatment options. This partnership will also allow us to contribute to the well-being of Malaysians, who have one of the lowest survival rate for breast cancer in the Asia Pacific region,” she said. Cancer Research Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Professor Dr Teo Soo-Hwang said that World Health Organisation projected that 45 million Asians would be diagnosed with cancer in the next five years.  “Research grants are important so that we can continue to break new grounds towards effectively reversing cancer. Thanks to the support from Yayasan PETRONAS, Malaysia is now in the global spotlight for cancer research, paving the way for CRM to be an engine that drives cancer research in Malaysia to international level,” she said. She added that research shows that one in 20 Malaysians develop breast cancer by inheriting a specific gene, the BRCA 1/BRCA2 gene and CRM is leading the largest study of Asian women on the role of these rare genetic variants, as well as common genetic variants in risk to breast cancer. “This information is now incorporated into the clinical guidelines for Malaysian doctors and is used in the development of cancer genetics services nationwide. Through this work, Malaysia is the first middle-income country to enable genetics services to be available widely, rather than just in specialist hospitals in major urban hospitals,’’ she added. PETRONAS has been one of the leading corporate funders for CRM since 2001 when the partnership started. PETRONAS has contributed RM13.5 million to-date, towards CRM’s work in six internationally significant programmes, including in the areas of discovery, tool development and intervention of the disease. Yayasan PETRONAS continues with this commitment with the grant announced today. PETRONAS has been active in promoting awareness of the disease including fund-raising through the annual Orchid Run & Ride (since 2015) and lighting up the PETRONAS Twin Towers in pink for breast cancer awareness in 2013. There were also cancer awareness talks for employees, donations to cancer support groups, and hosting the World Cancer Congress 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Low-Income Families Increase Household Income via Entrepreneurship Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 April 2019 – In addressing the issue of poverty, Yayasan PETRONAS with its partners have rolled out an entrepreneurship programme, Sentuhan Harapan – Planting Tomorrow. It is aimed at harnessing the skills and improving the financial strength and livelihood of those in the B40* community bracket. More than 460 low income families in Sabah and Terengganu have participated in the Sentuhan Harapan – Planting Tomorrow programme since it started in 2017 and the results have been promising – with some gaining a three-fold increase in their household income. Yayasan PETRONAS Acting Chief Executive Officer, Puan Lita Osman said, “The Planting Tomorrow programme is in support of the government’s efforts to alleviate poverty in the country. It has delivered positive impact – increasing the household income of the poor and improving the local economy in several states.” The programme includes six months training on financial management, product marketing, motivation and personal grooming. Additionally, participants also received monthly food aid worth RM80 for a year through a partnership with non-profit organisation, Yayasan MyKasih, via its cashless payment system. Yayasan PETRONAS provided other amenities including a water gravity-feed supply, homestay development, agriculture equipment and seeds in order to help these communities cultivate a sustainable income. In Sabah, for example, villagers who used to spend four hours on foot to fetch water are now able to translate this time to growing their crops and other productive enterprise activities, thanks to the water gravity-feed supply. Lita explained: “Social progress is inclusive and we’re encouraged that more Malaysians will have a better quality of life through these programmes. Yayasan PETRONAS intends to scale out the programme across a few states in Malaysia targeting 600 B40 communities this year, based on the success and impact of the Planting Tomorrow programme.” Testimonials: Planting Tomorrow Programme Participants Haslinda Abdullah, 38, started a snacks business about two years ago in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. “As soon as I returned from one of the programme sessions, my daughter and I decided to rebrand our products from ‘Kerepek Megi’ to ‘Keropok Megi Linda Homemade’. We applied what we learned from the programme to improve our product packaging to suit consumer preferences.” Haslinda also exercised intensive promotion on social media, installed banners and distributed business cards to the surrounding areas. As a result, demand for her products has increased. She now uses up to six kilogram of ingredients a day, up from one kilogram previously, whilst generating RM790 a month from just RM100-RM200 a month previously. Wan Maznah Othman, 58, is proud to have surpassed her business targets. The single mother of four children, who runs a small kuih business said, “When I started the programme, I was only targeting to earn around RM1,000 a month. Alhamdulillah, after six-months, I have achieved RM1,500!” Wan Maznah’s business now includes frozen products in addition to the kuih-muih she sells at Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. Justa Dahlan, 32, from Pitas, Sabah said: “With the help of PETRONAS, we finally had water flowing into the village through the gravity-feed system. Before, we had to walk to the river, fill up our bottles and buckets and carry them back, three times a day,” Justah related.  Her sister Ritah added that Planting Tomorrow opened her eyes to the benefits of working together. “Previously, we used to work on our individual land. Now, we help each other, and reap more profit. We also work faster together.” They are now financially comfortable with RM1,500 – RM3,300 a month, compared with their previous earnings of RM150- RM500 – a three-fold increase. Haina Sapah, 33, a home operator in Kg Imbak, Sabah said, “Setting up the homestay was challenging initially. I had to come up with funds, to add to the provisions by PETRONAS to equip my house with the required facilities. But I enjoy doing homestay. It helps supplement our main income from the oil palm plots. As long as Imbak Canyon is here, I think our homestay will thrive.” Haina has three children and is one of 22 registered operators for the homestays in Kampung Imbak, which are known as “Homestay Po’pomponan” or “a place of gathering”. Imbak Canyon Studies Centre Opens to World-Class Rainforest Biodiversity Research

TONGOD, Sabah, 26 March 2019 (Tuesday): Amidst lush greenery and the beautiful Imbak Falls, the Imbak Canyon Studies Centre (ICSC) was officially open today, marking a milestone for the Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA), a pristine rainforest in the heart of Sabah, and home to a wide variety of flora, fauna and unique landscapes. Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Mohd Shafie bin Haji Apdal officiated at the opening ceremony, accompanied by the Director of Yayasan Sabah Datuk Haji Jamalul Kiram bin Datuk Haji Mohd Zakaria; PETRONAS and Yayasan PETRONAS Chairman Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh; and President and Group Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin. The launch of the ICSC is an important step in the Sabah State Government’s move to protect the State’s rainforest heritage and the environment, adding to its capabilities to host world-class biodiversity and environmental research. ICCA is one of the five conservation areas managed by Yayasan Sabah Group, in addition to Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, Silam Coast and Taliwas River. Since 2010, PETRONAS has committed a total of RM83 million towards the conservation of Imbak Canyon – making it the first and largest ever local partnership with Yayasan Sabah Group to conserve a gazetted forest protection area in the State. Today, the parties extended their partnership for the ICSC through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).  ICSC is a 27-hectare facility that sits within the 27,599-hectare core zone of the ICCA. Chairman of PETRONAS and Yayasan PETRONAS Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh said: “ICSC is central to the conservation work at Imbak. In order to spur research activities here, PETRONAS through Yayasan PETRONAS, plans to introduce an environment research grant to spur research related to biodiversity, carbon sink as well as in new energy.” “We are confident that the partnership with Yayasan Sabah Group will enable us to protect intellectual property rights and commercial patents that may arise from the research conducted in Imbak Canyon,” he said. “We want to continue the work in conservation in a sustainable and scalable way, where there can be shared success,” Datuk Nizam added. Meanwhile, the Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Haji Jamalul said: “ICSC will strengthen the position of ICCA as a centre of learning for the indigenous communities, in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources as well as gene bank conservation and exploration of pharmaceutical and biotechnological potentials. Nourishing Young Children Through The Food Basket Programme

LAHAD DATU, 10 March 2019 – Housewife Siti Hanyah Johardi enters the health clinic in Tungku here carrying her three-year-old daughter Nor Ani Sazira. One can easily notice the healthy and jovial little girl, but a couple of months ago her condition was the complete opposite – she was very thin and suffering from malnutrition. In last August, Nor Ani, the youngest of Siti Hanyah’s five children, was identified among the 76 children in Lahad Datu, as suffering from malnutrition. She was immediately placed under Food Basket programme, a collaboration between the State Health Department and PETRONAS, which was initiated in mid-2017. Nor Ani joined the rest of about 700 children who have benefited from the programme where PETRONAS provides funds for the supply and delivery of monthly food packages to 130 government clinics in 13 districts in the state. The children, identified by the Department, receive a monthly food package comprising essential food including rice, breakfast cereal, milk as well as multivitamins and other supplements, until their nutritional condition improves to a satisfactory level as set by the Ministry of Health. Siti Hanyah says she is willing to make the long trip to the clinic, getting up early in the morning once a month to walk to a paved road with her daughter in her arms. She then will hitch a ride to the health clinic about 13km away to collect the food package so that she can give her daughter a chance to grow well and healthy. “I just hope she can be healthy. I cannot bear to see her so thin and sickly,” she said. Now going into the sixth month of collecting the monthly package under the programme, Siti Hanyah smiles every time she looks at her daughter. “She was 8.0kg before. She then slowly increased to 8.5kg, 9.0kg and eventually to 11.0kg,” she said, beaming. “I am so grateful for this assistance and hope that she will be stable by next month,” Siti Hanyah said referring to her daughter. A round trip to the clinic would cost Siti Hanyah about RM6. A small amount to most people but not to her. As Siti Hanyah’s husband who works in a factory is the sole breadwinner, there’s not much money left to spend every month after the usual, essential expenses. But Siti Hanyah will save whatever little she can so that she will have enough money to take her daughter to the clinic every month. Besides Lahad Datu, other districts benefitting from the programme are Pitas, Kota Marudu, Kinabatangan, Tongod, Sipitang, Kudat, Kuala Penyu, Kota Belud, Beaufort, Tuaran, Penampang, and Ranau. For the remaining districts in the state, the Department will handle the supply and delivery on its own. The Food Basket programme is part of PETRONAS’ sustai`nable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort that aims to contribute to the well-being of society. Yayasan PETRONAS, the CSR arm of PETRONAS, is working closely with the State Health Department to implement the programme. Apart from Food Basket, other programmes in Sabah include Planting Tomorrow – a nurturing livelihood programme in Kota Marudu and Pitas – and two education infrastructure projects, namely the Asrama Harian Luar Bandar in Pulau Balambangan and MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) in Ranau.
