PETRONAS Employees and Local Community Plant 1,000 Trees at Sabah’s Crocker Range

KOTA KINABALU, 15 October 2019 – More than 150 staff volunteers from PETRONAS, Sabah Forestry Department, the local community, as well as other government departments and agencies today planted 1,000 trees at the Crocker Range Forest Reserve.

In addition to the tree planting activity, efforts to raise awareness on environmental conservation also included workshops at St Michael’s Secondary School in Penampang, which recorded the participation of more than 100 students.

General Manager of PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan, Rokiah Sulaiman said these initiatives support PETRONAS’ larger focus on environment conservation, and are aligned to the aims set out by Yayasan PETRONAS, its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm.

“The two-day environmental conservation programme is a continuation of our collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department in previous years. Last year, we planted 1,000 trees at the Kawang Forest Reserve in Papar and another 2,000 mangrove seedlings to rehabilitate a mangrove forest area in Tuaran in 2015 and 2017.”

“We continue to collaborate with relevant authorities and communities through our Sentuhan Alam focus area. We hope that such programmes will continue to ensure we collectively and actively contribute towards the conservation of the environment for the benefit of future generations,” Rokiah added.

The Crocker Range Forest Reserve covers an area of 350,584 hectares and is located south of Mount Kinabalu. It consists of mountain chains, hills and valleys and is home to a wide variety of vegetation types, from tropical lowland forest and hill dipterocarp forest, to upper montane forest.

Through its CSR arm Yayasan PETRONAS, the national oil and gas company will deepen its efforts in environmental research, rehabilitation, training and public awareness programmes as well as activate the network of PETRONAS staff volunteers for environmental conservation.

Apart from the Sentuhan Alam focus area, local community development and education are also key focus areas for Yayasan PETRONAS, through the Sentuhan Harapan and Sentuhan Ilmu respectively.
