Ramadan Cheer for Children with Cancer as Sentuhan Kasih goes Nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 May 2019 – Yayasan PETRONAS volunteers, in the spirit of Ramadan, visited the children’s cancer ward at Kuala Lumpur Women and Children Hospital (WCH) today, surprising 40 children with toys and ‘duit raya’.

The visit, part of the Sentuhan Kasih Yayasan PETRONAS programme, also saw the 20 volunteers spending time with the young cancer patients aged between two months and 17 years old.

Speaking at the event, Yayasan PETRONAS CEO, Lita Osman, said it was a humbling experience to be with the children and their parents, to see their strength in the face of adversity.

“Time spent at the hospital are long and filled with anxiety. It gets more difficult during Ramadan, which is usually spent with friends and family. Through Sentuhan Kasih we are continuing the consistent efforts of PETRONAS employees since 2005, when the programme started, creating space where good can flourish,” she said.

“We are grateful to WCH for the opportunity to spend time with the children and their families. We wish the children speedy recovery and for the families to remain strong. We believe in the spirit of sharing, especially during festive occasions and are expanding our Sentuhan Kasih programme nationwide to impact more people,” she said.

In addition to distributing toys for the children, the volunteers also handed out diapers and milk to the Kumpulan Ibu Bapa Dan Sokongan Anak- Anak Kanser (KIDS).

A volunteer, Hafreez Aizat Hasni said: “Experience with the children here has taught me to be more positive and courageous in facing adversity. Together with other PETRONAS volunteers, we are grateful for the opportunity to offer the children and their family some support.”

Earlier this morning, another 20 PETRONAS Volunteers went to SK Dato Keramat 1 and 2 to organize talks, distribute ‘duit raya’ and conduct various group activities with 70 asnaf students in Primary 4, 5 and 6.

Spreading Joy with More Malaysians Nationwide

This year, the Sentuhan Kasih Yayasan PETRONAS programme aims to reach at least 2,800 less privileged Malaysian families, celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai. The Foundation will be distributing RM815,000 in cash and kind during this festive period.

From 8 May until 15 June 2019, Yayasan PETRONAS is joining hands with state agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and volunteers from the PETRONAS group to assist families in need.

The Sentuhan Kasih Yayasan PETRONAS programme is part of the Foundation’s Community Well-being and Development focus area, initiated to coincide with every major celebration in Malaysia. It provides an avenue for Yayasan PETRONAS to work with communities to provide for their basic needs and well-being.
